Spectrometer Services was established in 1961 by Peter Hedger as Australia’s first independent and complete 24hr metal analysis service. The business was aimed at industry and companies that were turning to analytical controls to maintain product quality.
Peter, who was formally employed at the Commonwealth Aluminium Company Bell Bay Tasmania, recognised the need for quick and reliable testing of metal products in Australia and purchased a spark emission spectrometer. Setting up a laboratory in North Melbourne with this new technology, Peter’s reputation for accurate and dependable test results placed Spectrometer Services as a leader in it’s field.
Peter’s brother John Hedger joined the business soon after as a metallurgist and has since created a wealth of expertise in spectrographic work. Relocating to larger premises in the early 1970’s, Spectrometer Services also began classical wet chemical analyses.
Joining his father’s business in 1980 as a recent graduate chemist, Bernard Hedger developed the business further in chemical and geochemical testing with the introduction of ICP-AES. In 1994, he took over the business after Peter’s passing and has since remained Managing Director.
With the creation of sound business and quality management systems, Spectrometer Services is well-founded for a successful future in a continually changing and increasingly competitive industry.
